Plymouth University visit to Calstock October 2026
Visit to Calstock by Plymouth University 1st-year Geography students - 12th October 2026
Forty-four first-year students travelled out from Plymouth by train as part of their course induction to learn about the creation of the wetland area with reference to the new flood defence sheme, and to hear a little bit about the history of Calstock.
Numerous topics were covered including the development of the wetlands from freshwater to inter-tidal habitat and the effects on birdlife and vegetation, the history of the flood plain and river path, the industrial heritage of the area including mining, fruit and flower production, river transport and the railway. This was the 'rural' aspect of their day out and after a brief visit they headed back to Plymouth to compare the 'urban' area of Devonport with what they had seen in Calstock. The lead tutor has already asked to come back for a repeat visit in 2027. DW.
